Getting ready for a Broadway audition

Let’s find the perfect song for your audition

Most of those aspiring actors that wish to see their names up on a shiny, sparkling Broaday theatre marquee have to go through the painfully excrutiating process of auditioning.

Auditioning is hard: long waits, those big rooms packed with the executive and artistic team, lots of competition, uncertainty, facing all the “no”‘s…

But it might not be that hard if you follow our advice!

1 – Be Realistic

Choose a song that will make you shine. If you can’t make those killing riffs from Defying Gravity, that is fine – maybe you don’t need to. Sing a song you could sing on your sleep and that you can feel confident performing.

2 – Find the song that fits the style and the character of the show you’re auditioning for

Maybe your performance of I dreamed a dream from Les Mis is terrific but you are auditioning for Heathers: The Musical, and, you know… Maybe it’s not the smartest choice. So, choose a song that you think might go well for the character you are auditioning for and that also suits the general tone of the show. This is how the casting team will be able to see if you are a perfect fit for the song or not!

3 – Follow the casting team directions

The casting team gave you directions? GREAT! Make sure to follow them. The casting team need to see if you are willing to take directions. Being flexible and adding their guidelines to your performance will definitely be an asset.

1 – Dead Mom

Who does not love Sophia Anne Caruso’s electric voice in Beetlejuice‘s hit song Dead Mom? It might not be the easiest song to perform, but if it is within your vocal range, I would say go for it! You will be able to show off your skills singing lower notes and then you can belt out those long gorgeous notes. What do you think?

2 – It’s All Coming Back To Me Now

Céline Dion. Timeless hit. You will think: yeah great, another female balad…. But if you are familiar with Jeremy Jordan’s gigs at New York City’s iconic 54 Below, you will know that if you are a man, you can also sing it out loud! Check it out here if you wanna here and listen to it by yourself:

3 – Pulled

Yes, Pulld from The Addams Family is definitely a winner. It will allow you to show a lot of your skills: you will belt, you will rap, you will make them laugh…

So, what do you think? Found anything that might be useful? Any recommendations? Make sure to let us know here!
