How to Convert Finale Files (.musx or .mus) Into Dorico, Sibelius, and MuseScore
A few days ago, MakeMusic announced the end Finale’s development. For 35 years, this music notation software has been one of the industry standards.
Over the course of the next year, Finale users should have enough time to find an alternative solution so they can continue working on their musical projects. But what will happen to all the Finale files (.musx or .mus) created over the past 35 years?
In this blog post, the expert musicians at My Sheet Music Transcriptions will guide you on how to make all your Finale files (.musx or .mus) accessible in other music notation applications, such as Dorico, Sibelius, and MuseScore.

MusicXML files: the key to the process
To ensure you can access your work in other music notation applications, you’ll need to export your Finale files (.musx or .mus) into the MusicXML file format (.mxl, .musicxml, or .xml).
This can be done in two easy steps. From Finale dashboard:
- Go to File > Export > MusicXML.
- Choose a name, select a destination for your MusicXML file, and click Save.
Now, you’ll need to import your MusicXML files to your alternative music notation software: Dorico, Sibelius or MuseScore. But each program has its own unique process for this step.
To help with this, at My Sheet Music Transcriptions we have created three different pages. Each is tailored to guide you through the specific import procedure for each notation software. They also contain tips and a contact form in case you have questions or need further assistance.
